Gregg County grand jury hands down 32 indictments (2024)

A Gregg County grand jury issued 32 indictments on Jan. 31, charging people with crimes such as aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated and credit or debit card abuse and other crimes.

An indictment is a formal accusation that a person has committed a crime. It does not mean that person is guilty. People who are indicted must still go through the legal process to determine guilt or innocence.

James Thomas Kerns Jr., 40, of Longview, was charged with collision involving serious bodily injury in relation to a Sept. 18, 2023, wreck. According to a report on the incident, a black Chevrolet 2500 truck hit a black Honda Civic that was stopped on Pine Tree Road. The truck driver didn’t stop but left the scene and later left the truck on the side of the road and fled on foot.

The report said the collision “caused major damage to the Honda Civic, enough to make a four-door vehicle appear to be a two-door vehicle.” The Honda’s driver had a “deep laceration” on the back of his head that was about 4 inches long and a 1/4- wide.

Longview Police Officer Rodney Smith tracked Kerns down after finding his driver’s license next to the passenger front door, the report said. The truck was registered to Kerns, who later told the officer the truck had been stolen. His mother, however, told the officer Kerns had told her he was involved in a wreck and had run.

Also, Tonia Ola Allen, also known as “T Allen,” 49, was indicted on a charge of driving while intoxicated, third or more offense.

Her jail information lists a Galveston address, but Allen has previously operated a bar, a restaurant and a catering business in the Longview area.

Her indictment stems from a Dec. 10 arrest. A report on the incident says she was arrested after she stopped in her vehicle and talked to an officer on patrol at Texas Players on Spur 63. Her slurred speech led the officer to conduct additional inquiry that resulted in her arrest, the report said.
