A couple= two of
A few= Little of (depends on the item: a few dollars could be any quantity between 1-10, or if you're a billionaire, 1000 :P)
"A couple of" can be interchangeable for "a few" in a metaphorical way. You'll hear often "a couple bucks" and they don't literally mean two, just "little of them"=a few. But the word couple, in origin, meant two.

No hard rule here. No one knows when "a few" becomes "many".
couple = 2
Give me a couple of candies ~= Give me 2 or more. So 2, 3, 4 will work.
A few ~= more than 2. So 3, 4 or 10 will work.

I think of it this way: "couple" = 2, "few" is 3-5. "few" is never 2.
